Community Outreach - AmeriCorps VISTA Project with Greater Fox Cities HFH

Project Goal

You’ll increase community awareness and engagement across all of the organization’s programs, both as volunteers and as prospective program participants. By reducing barriers and inspiring participation, HFH Greater Fox Cities will be able to build and repair more homes and assist more people on their journey out of poverty.

Project Objectives

OUTREACH STRATEGY: Develop a community-informed outreach strategy by identifying underrepresented groups and barriers to participation.

  • Review the organization’s historical and current efforts to recruit volunteers and program participants. Compare current participant demographics to those of the community as a whole.

  • Based on that data, identify underrepresented groups across all programs (as volunteers and participants). Research barriers to participation, gathering community feedback and input when possible, as well as best practices to address those barriers.

  • Focusing on volunteer entry points and pathways into Habitat programs, work with stakeholders – staff, volunteers, community members – to create strategies to address those barriers (more info sessions, partner referrals, simplified entry points, etc).

  • Identify and connect with potential partners (schools, businesses, cultural organizations, etc) to create and implement new/revised outreach strategies.

HABITAT STORIES: As part of the strategy to connect with underrepresented communities and increase participation, capture and share stories about volunteers, homeowners, and other program participants (home repair, Almost Home, other applicants).

  • Review the organization’s existing content and previous outreach campaigns. Work with staff and volunteers to identify potential subjects/spokespeople for new campaign.

  • Create a consistent framework for gathering information to create compelling stories and images – standard questions (or desired information), checklist of photo requirements (volunteers in Habitat gear or homeowners in their homes, for example).

  • Collect stories and develop messaging that helps people see themselves as volunteers and/or as eligible participants/homeowners.

  • Create print and digital materials to aid in outreach efforts social media campaigns, handouts at events, info flyers, etc.

CAMPAIGN LAUNCH AND ASSESSMENT: Initiate outreach efforts and track outcomes, resulting in replicable outreach strategies.

  • Create performance measures and methods to track the corresponding data.

  • Connect with potential partners and develop relationships so they continue to send potential volunteers and program applicants to the organization.

  • Launch campaigns (social media, tabling efforts at events, etc)

  • Collect and review data. Identify successful outreach methods. Develop processes and procedures and outreach toolkits (how to run info sessions, how to collect stories, etc). Identify who will be responsible for outreach efforts once the VISTA’s term of service is complete.

About Greater Fox Cities HFH

Greater Fox Cities Habitat for Humanity is located in Appleton and started serving families through new home construction in 1993. Since then, the organization has grown to support two Habitat for Humanity ReStore retail outlets, an Almost Home program, home rehab, home repair and most recently, Neighborhood Revitalization and Rock the Block® events. Habitat’s Deconstruction Program is part of their ReStore, which resells quality building materials, raising money to help more families and diverting waste from landfills.
