Home Preservation Program - AmeriCorps VISTA Project with HFH Ozaukee County

Applications due by May 1 for a June 1 start date.

HFH Ozaukee designed and installed a wheelchair ramp, making their home more accessible.

VISTA Project Goal

You will develope a home preservation program for Habitat for Humanity of Ozaukee that will assist lower income homeowners to complete needed home repairs and make homes more accessible.

Project Objectives

HOME PRESERVATION PROGRAM: Develop a sustainable home repair program that will increase the organization’s impact on local communities.

  1. Review the program’s development to date. Identify what information is still needed and research accordingly.

  2. Create materials such as intake forms, mechanisms to track a repair project’s progress (such as spreadsheets or a project management tool such as Asana), completion forms, etc. Identify performance measurement metrics to evaluate the program’s progress and develop methods to ensure the information is captured and collected.

  3. Implement the program. Track project process, noting areas for improvement as well as highlights. Conduct more research, as needed, and make adjustments to the process.

FUNDRAISING: Develop a sustainable fundraising plan that will support the organization’s operations, including the home preservation program.

  1. Review the organization’s existing resources, as well as the needs of the repair program. Research best practices and sources for obtaining those resources.

  2. Working with staff and other stakeholders, create a resource development plan to meet the program’s needs and fit within the organization’s framework as a whole. Create a timeline and tracking mechanisms. Craft consistent messaging and branding (using HFHI guidelines) to use in grant applications, fundraising appeals, at events, etc.

  3. Implement program. Track progress and make adjustments as needed.

VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT: Develop the organization’s volunteer infrastructure – improving volunteer recruitment, training, and retention – in order to sustainably support the organization’s affordable housing efforts.

  1. Review the organization’s existing volunteer program, noting strengths and weaknesses. Research best practices to improve the volunteer program, with a focus on recruitment and training.

  2. Based on the assessment and research, develop a plan to increase volunteer recruitment and improve training and retention, while automating/streamlining processes and procedures.

  3. Implement new/revised volunteer program. Create/update processes and procedures and related materials. Identify potential volunteer sources and connect with them. Manage the volunteer calendar.
